Protection of aircraft against fire and explosion

Fire fighting in aviation exists since the birth of aviation, as there are much fuel, unlimited quantity of oxidizers and variety of potential sources of ignition in any aircraft.
The "RD&PE Zvezda" JSC created a complex of test facilities for full-scale tests of aircraft/helicopter fire-protection means. The aircraft engines are used to simulate fires under real flight conditions. This unique complex handles a full scope of testing for units and systems, including the fire extinguishing and fire alarm systems.


The problem of explosion safety of aircraft/helicopter fuel tanks was given much attention. In order to solve that problem, there was developed a prototype of the "Automatic system for explosion suppression in the initial phase of its development" for the Mi-6 helicopter.

The advanced technologies used in the aerospace industry were the basis for development of fire-extinguishing systems for complex processing plants of the national economy. A novel automatic fire-extinguishing high-pressure pulse system was created on the basis of non-toxic, ecologically safe and non-freezing water solution. The system was tested on the full-scale models for fire suppression in the gas-pumping station by the method of high-pressure pulse supply of the fine-dispersed solution. This fire-extinguishing system was named "Water mist".

For further development of this area, we are creating a full-scale fire test facility. It will be used to study and test the fire-extinguishing systems designed for gas-pumping stations in the wide range of operation conditions.
